Calgary‘s Shannon Kleibrink scored one in the extra end to edge Thunder Bay‘s Krista McCarville 7-6 Monday to capture the CUETS Schmirler Women‘s Charity Classic at the Callie Curling Club in Regina.
McCarville‘s rink led 3-1 after four ends, but Kleibrink‘s foursome took one in the fifth end, stole three in the sixth end and tacked on another in the seventh end before McCarville knotted the score 6-6 with three in the eighth end.
Getting to the final wouldn‘t be easy.
McCarville and her Fort William Curling Club quartet that includes third Tara George, second Kari MacLean and lead Lorraine Lang, lost 6-5 to Rene Miettinen in Sunday morning‘s qualifier, meaning she‘d have to win the next two to reach the playoffs. She did.
First was a 6-3 decision over Selkirk‘s Kerri Flett and then a 9-4 decision over Regina‘s Chantelle Eberle late Sunday night, giving her a playoff date with Alberta‘s Cheryl Bernard.
McCarville beat Bernard Monday morning by a 7-5 score and later in the afternoon, she won her semifnal with Cindy Street by a lopsided 10-3 score, setting up the final with Kleibrink.
